CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. (September 28, 2014) – The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade (APBOT) was honoured at this year’s Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) for outstanding advocacy efforts as the voice of business in Ajax and Pickering. APBOT was among just three boards of trade and chambers of commerce from across Canada that were singled out at the annual Canadian Chamber Competition. This year’s Chamber Competition was on the theme of becoming the voice of business on a particular issue and APBOT captured the bronze award for its leadership efforts on the transportation and transit file. The award was in recognition of the fact that APBOT has been very focused on bringing attention to the transportation and transit infrastructure needs of Durham Region in the context of plans to improve the network across the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA). Earlier this year, the board of trade’s transportation policy recommendations were endorsed by the municipal councils of both Ajax and Pickering.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM was held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and APBOT was represented by the organization’s First Vice President, Denise Jones, CPA, CA of Collins Barrow Durham and APBOT Executive Director Kathy McKay.

“Our Transportation Task Force has done a tremendous amount of work on this file and it is an honour to be recognized by our chamber peers for a job well done,” said Jones. “However, we can’t rest on our laurels because so much work remains to be done if we are to find workable solutions to Durham Region’s growing congestion crisis.”

In addition to providing networking, education and savings opportunities for businesses of all sizes and sectors, the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade’s Government Relations Committee and its respective working groups are actively engaged on a wide variety of policy matters that impact the local business community.
