APBOT meets with provincial ministers to discuss ORPP

Posted 6 years ago on · Permalink

The Honourable Mitzie Hunter, MPP (Scarborough/Guildwood) and The Honourable Tracy MacCharles, MPP (Pickering/Scarborough East) as well as representatives from the Ministry of Finance, met with a representative business cross-section of APBOT members at Lenbrook on Friday Nov 27 to discuss the proposed Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP). The Business leaders questioned Hunter, who is the Minister Responsible for the ORPP, for more details on the proposed plan and scheduled roll-out. Specifically, they sought clarification around the expected costs to small businesses and the potential impact on hiring by businesses of all sizes. Questions were also raised regarding the impact on the self-employed, the disabled, and the not-for-profit sector.

The meeting was cordial and informative and both ministers were very open to the perspective of the local business community. The Government Relations Committee of the APBOT has offered to continue to provide a channel of communication to the Ministry and from the Ministry as the plan is finalized.  The Ministry was encouraged to also promote information directly to employees so that the burden of education is not entirely upon the employers.

The APBOT has been following this issue closely since it was announced and will continue to do so. We will keep members informed of developments as they become available.
