Let’s talk about mental health in the workplace
Posted 7 years ago on · Permalink
Dr. Ian Dawe has a passion for making a difference in the work place. As the physician-in-chief at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, he knows all too well the difficulties many people are facing due to mental health challenges.
In fact, mental illness remains the #1 cause of workplace disability and costs the national economy more than $50 billion each year.
The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade is passionate about employee wellness and recently passed a resolution at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) calling on the Government of Ontario to develop a Workplace Mental Health Strategy.
That’s why we were so pleased to partner with Bell Let’s Talk to host an introduction to the complex issue of mental health in the workplace and to welcome Dr. Dawe, who — in addition to his role at Ontario Shores — is also Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
At the event, Dr. Dawe conducted a mindfulness exercise for 3 minutes with the entire room that left many feeling relaxed, centred and ready to take on the day with intention.
Dawe is a man on a mission to eradicate suicide within the hospital system. In his remarks, he mentioned that he took on the goal because he found a case study of a hospital in Michigan that eradicated suicide within their institution.
Dr. Dawe discussed how to recognize the signs of mental illness in the workplace; the importance of early intervention; ways to promote mental well-being; and how to access other sources of information about mental health.
His full presentation will be available at www.ontarioshores.ca.
