Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan addresses attendees.

Mayor Steve Parish of Ajax and Mayor Dave Ryan of Pickering shared their visions for the future of their respective municipalities and for Durham Region at the2015 Mayors’ Breakfast Address, held Thursday, February 19th at the Ajax Convention Centre.

The two long-standing Mayors both acknowledged the positive working relationship they enjoy with the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade and highlighted the many things we have accomplished together over the years.

In his remarks, Mayor Parish highlighted plans for an intensified downtown core in Ajax and updated the attendees about the progress of the Pat Bayly Square development. He also voiced his concerns about the negative economic impact of the algae problem at the Ajax waterfront.

Mayor Ryan was vocal in his support for an airport in Pickering and felt that public opinion has shifted on this issue over the years and was also very supportive of a proposal by Rouge Valley Health System to construct an ambulatory care facility in Pickering.  The Pickering mayor discussed the employment lands in Seaton and outlined some plans to attract employment and investment.

While both mayors agree with APBOT that Durham Region requires more transportation and transit infrastructure, the two are not aligned over the proposed Durham Live  casino, hotel  and entertainment development. Pickering Council has rezoned the land at Bayly and Church to accommodate the project, but Ajax has appealed to the province, citing concerns over the impact it would have critical transportation infrastructure in Ajax, notably the Westney Road 401 interchange.

The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade values the collaborative relationship we enjoy with both Ajax and Pickering and thanked the mayors for participating in this worthwhile event once more.

The event attracted a large crowd and attendees raised $1241 for Scientists in School, our not-for-profit recipient.
