Statement from Nicole Gibson on Ontario imposing provincewide “emergency brake”

Posted 1 year ago on · Permalink

April 1, 2021 – The following statement is being issued on behalf of Nicole Gibson, Executive Director of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade regarding Ontario imposing a provincewide “emergency brake”:

“As the number of cases continue to rise and our local hospitals reach capacity, we understand the Ontario Government’s need to respond. The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade would like to thank our front-line workers and ask that we all do, what we can, to support them.

Today brings difficult news for local businesses. For many businesses, they are learning that their ability to reopen has been further delayed. For other businesses, they are learning that their partial reopening must be walked back. And all businesses are having to again invest time and money into understanding new and short-notice regulation.

We all wish to do what is right and every business owner wants to keep their staff and customers safe. However, the reality is that the local businesses have suffered and continue to suffer a very real financial and mental toll.

During this shutdown, we encourage the community to support businesses and not-for-profits in any way they can. This could include getting takeout from a local restaurant, buying from small retailers, posting positive reviews, and promoting local business via social media.

While we are optimistic about the vaccine rollout, there are still challenging times ahead. The Board of Trade will continue to advocate for risk-based closures, in particular as restaurants, personal services, and gyms continue to bare the brunt of restrictions.  We also continue to advocate for proper and clear guidance and support for business owners, that make it easy for businesses to understand what is ahead, what is required, and what supports are available.

We encourage local businesses in need of support and information to continue to reach out to the Board of Trade. We are here to help.”
